Mindfulness Meditation: What it Means and Why I started practicing it

So I wanted to tell you guys about something I recently started doing. They recently introduced ‘mindfulness meditation sessions’ at work and I was curious. After asking around, a colleague of mine convinced me to attend the session and I thought I’d share a bit about what it’s all about.

Mindfulness Meditation is a form of meditation less focused on clearing your mind but more on raising your general awareness of the present- mindfulness. I’ve always been interested in meditation but never knew how to go about it, so I thought I’d to try it out.

So what exactly is mindfulness:

Mindfulness is a state of active, open attention on the present. When you’re mindful, you observe your thoughts and feelings from a distance, without judging them good or bad. Instead of letting your life pass you by, mindfulness means living in the moment and awakening to experience”

A few of the ‘scientific’ benefits of mindfulness are:

Stress reduction

Increased focus

Less emotional reactivity

Mental clarity

Less anxiety

There’s definitely a lot more to it than I could explain. If you’re interested in knowing more about it you can check out the following:

There’s actually a number of techniques used to achieve mindfulness and meditation is just one of them.

I haven’t been to many sessions yet but I’m really looking forward to getting more into this practice. After my first session I immediately felt a difference in the way my body and mind felt. I instantly felt more calm. The sessions focus on teaching breathing techniques since breathing is an activity you do everyday and once you can learn to be more aware of your breathing the more general awareness you gain.

I’m not gonna lie though, I went into it with a bit of skepticism but it’s important not to have any expectations and to understand that as with most things in life, practice makes perfect.

Life is chaotic and it’s really been getting away from me lately. Beyond achieving mindfulness I’m also using these sessions as an opportunity to just press pause. Even better that they happen right in the middle of the day. With everything going on in my life I think it’s a good platform to gain focus, control and to consciously remember to take a break. That can only make me a better person right?

If you’ve ever tried meditation or mindfulness techniques let me know about your experience. If you just wanna know more about it let me know and I’ll be happy to help you where I can or get the direct you to it if I don’t have the answers 🙂

About the Look

White to the office is daunting to me. I’ve said this before. That doesn’t mean I won’t play around with it though. A white pencil skirt is the perfect way to stand out in the office.

You can pair it with color you really want to make a statement or keep it monochrome to tone it down. I paired it with a light sweater, perfect for when there’s a little chill in the air.
