Farewell 2016: My Top 5 Lessons Learnt This Year

2016. What a year it’s been.

This is my final post for the year and as the year draws closer to an end I thought I would share my top 5 biggest lessons learnt this year.

Don’t just dream it, do it

I know a lot of people say this but I really had been wanting to start my blog for a while now but I was scared and always managed to convince myself not to do it. And this year I did it. It may not seem like a big deal to many but to me it was. I have so many more plans and ventures that I plan to do and I’ve told myself that from now on it’s not enough to live only through my thoughts. My actions need to speak louder.

Invest in yourself first

I’ve had to reassess my priorities this year and through that I’ve learnt that I need to be my own biggest investor. This means my time, my energy, my money everything. It’s about choosing if I want to party or sleep or rather spend that time doing something that will benefit me. Don’t get me wrong I have my fair share of fun but I need to prioritize what is more important and beneficial to me and put that first.

Don’t be afraid to fail

I attended the Cosmopolitan NexGen Women StartUps event a few weeks ago and there were a lot of speakers who shared their entrepreneurial journeys with the guests. All of them had a failure before the success came. And some were even still going through their failures or trying to figure out what’s next. The point is not that you can’t succeed without failing, it’s that failure doesn’t mean it’s the end of your journey. It’s a scary thought and I’ve always been too scared to take ‘leaps of faith” so to speak but I’ve been fortunate enough to meet a lot of strong successful women this year who’ve taught me that it’s okay for things to not be okay.

Learn from others

You can read all the books on everything in the world and Google your ass off but getting that firsthand teaching from people that have been through what you are going through  or where you wanna go is invaluable. Always Ask. You don’t know everything and  never will. We are surrounded by a wealth of knowledge in the form of people so learn from them. Ask them.

Do You

I’m gonna summarize this one in a quote:

“To be nobody but yourself in a world which is doing it’s best day and night to make you like everybody else means to fight the hardest battle which any human being can fight and never stop fighting”

Honestly 2016 has been bitter sweet. It has been great following your journey as a blogger and I echo the sentiments above. I for one have learnt to be selfish. Be selfish with, your time, money and energy. Not everyone deserves the best of you. As this year comes to an end I’m definetly excited to see what the office edit holds for the next year. Here’s to an amazing 2017

I definitely agree with you it’s important to be selfish with yourself and not to freely give yourself to others, that includes your time, energy, everything you mentioned above. It can be difficult especially as a woman to put yourself first as it’s in our nature to care for others first, next thing you’re left behind. Here’s to a wonderful 2017 where we’re not left behind 🙂
